Individuals
Motives for exploring these practices are varied. For some individuals, the desire is focused on academic, sports or professional performance. For others, it is to support work on a particular health concern, reduce stress, or simply feel a greater sense of balance. Understanding the goals and background is an important basis for tailoring a program to the individual.
Physicians
The literature supports the use of mindfulness skills in support of a variety of health-related concerns (cancer, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, IBS, lower back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes). The intention of this program is to support the physician/patient relationship, and to optimize clinical outcomes for patients.
Employers
In addition to the more obvious reasons employers may consider offering mindfulness training (performance enhancement, health of the employee population, retention), employers may also consider skills training in lieu of or alongside concerns typically handled by a “coach” or “management consultant”(performance issues, conflict resolution).
Mental Health Providers
For a variety of reasons, mental health professionals may be reluctant or lack the time to introduce mindfulness practice during session time. This program was designed to support mindfulness skill development alongside therapy, with a specific aim of supporting the therapeutic relationship with the care provider and the well-being of the client.
